CP at Dwell

2014 has been an incredible year for Contemporary Pull! Just a mere three months after the launch of our company on the east coast in New York at the ADHDS 2014 we found ourselves at the opening night of Dwell on Design in Los Angeles. One highlight was listening to the dialog between keynote speaker and American industrial designer Stephen Burks and Dwell Editor in Chief, Amanda Dameron onstage for a conversation about craft, collaboration and what’s next in design. We describe the experience, “the thrill of sensory overload” and we feel like “kids in the proverbial candy shop.” Imagine it!

Onstage, Burks unveiled the American version of The Traveler, a chair he designed in collaboration with Roche Bobois. The chair has a wooden frame–as opposed to the steel-framed European version–and upholstery meant “to mimic the posture of the body,” Burks says. “We’re all workaholics, so this American chair is about really relaxing–working hard and relaxing hard.” The collaboration, which Burks embarked on with the French furniture brand about one year ago, is “a dialogue between two different cultures, and every culture in between,” he says.

Another high point at the show was an exhibit of Bamboo flooring and plywood produced by Smith and Fong; CP founder Pamela Anderson fell in love with the product and was inspired by the brand!  Smith & Fong was founded in 1989 on the premise that bamboo offered unique opportunities and solutions to some of the world’s social and environmental challenges. They have expanded their company into new products that are beautiful, functional and still hold to their environmental ideals. You can read more about them and their product here – plyboo.com

Shipping containers are hot building products being used in many urban areas in residential and commercial applications. CubeDepot was right behind CP’s booth at the show. CubeDepot partnered with AB Design Studio, Inc. to deliver a visionary container office for consumers seeking efficient, modern, and cost-effective workspaces. The prototype, named Modular Expandable: Office Unit (ME:OU), CubeDepot and AB Designs showcased a conference room, waiting room, breezeway and lounge area, and a viewing room encased in five shipping containers with clean immaculate aesthetics. The assembled unit creates a durable, affordable and environmentally friendly structure. Finished internally with high-end design touches and externally with a fresh, glossy finish. Design shows are truly a unique opportunity for learning, growing and product sales, but also the ultimate opportunity for expanding our horizons!  “The feedback we received at the Dwell Show was solid affirmation for our new company. Some of our favorite comments included Where have you been?!; This is the most innovative design we have seen in the industry in a long time; and You are filling a void in the design world,” says Pamela Anderson.

Christopher Cumming, Vice President of Sales added, “As a new company, Dwell on Design was an amazing opportunity to interact with designers, architects, and consumers alike. It was great to see such positive and exciting reactions to our products. We have something new and fresh, and the show was an incredible platform to introduce CP to the West Coast.”

Kate Wilfer, Director of Operations really summed up the experience when she said, “Dwell on Design was a happy, adventurous and uplifting experience. The show was such an amazing mix of design innovation, quirky inventions and clever ways to display the boundless creativity. Our pulls were a perfect introduction into this world of high design and cutting edge ideas. All sorts of interesting people discovered our minimalist booth and reacted with positive enthusiasm to such a fresh new concept in hardware!! What fun it is to be a part of the Contemporary Pull team!!”
